Bob Seger - “Old Time Rock and Roll” Piano Lesson!
This video continues on from the last piano lesson: Boogie Woogie 101 where we focused on some 2 handed patterns. In this video “Old Time Rock and Roll” I show you how to use those patterns in a song. There really isnt too much more to it!
The chords follow the 12 bar blues progression in C. This means the chords are C, F and G. Each time you start another 12 bar blues section you need to play the hook in the beginning.
The notes for the hook in the beginning are: C C C C C Bb A G.
Oh and Halloween is coming up, see if you can find the pirate hat!
On a side note: They used this song in a cat food commercial but changed the lyrics to, “Just take the Friskies off the shelf, your cat can eat them all by himself.”
When they were recording this song, one of the recording engineers made a mistake, which caused the false start at the beginning of the song. After listening back to the mistake, they decided to keep the changes.

3 cheers!!!! Very clear instructions and well done videos. Easy to follow!!! Thanks a zillion, appreciate very much the time taken and the willingness to share!!!!!! Waiting for more… Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear chris,

I feel that i progress on piano and it’s a very pleasure. Thank you
Sincerely
I understand everything you said but i cant understand the part who start this isnt a tango or something like that. I am from Croatia so sorry if i done some mistake in this reply.
Hi Filip!
sorry for the delayed response… I’m having some health problems at the moment. Need as much rest as possible!
The lyrics are something like, “Don’t try and take me to no tango, Id rather hear a blues or funky old soul”.
Try doing a search in google for the words: “old time rock and roll lyrics”
hi chris,
hope you’re feeling better
this video is really helpful but i think my understanding is a bit off somewhere
is the C C C C C Bb A G outside the twelve bar form?
if i play a long to the recording it seem to be 16 bars like so
I-I-I-I
IV-IV-IV-IV
V-V-V-V
I-I-V-V
is that right or am i talking absolute rubbish? (sorry am a bit of a noob)

First post first off, Thank you for what you are doing for me.
If you could go way back to 2008 with me and explain a little better the technique in the Old Time Rock and Roll where you are comping on the F chord and throw in the sweet accent (looks like a slide into a Bb and D). I am not making it sound sweet.
Is there a rule on how old a post is to comment on it?
btw that lick was at about 42 seconds into the vid. Great sound. Me wants it!
Thank you for displaying the piano rhythm or old time rock and roll. The left hand sounds ok, the right hand is not exactly what the piano plays throughout the song. The piano player for bob seger could easily help all us musician out by posting his piano part and save us piano player the frustation of trying to play exactly what he plays. Thank you.
