Here is a performance example of Chestnuts Roasting on an open fire. Halloween isn’t even a week away and my students in Seattle are asking for me to teach them christmas songs. This one is a little more jazzy than most of them. This isn’t a lesson so much as a teaser to get everyone in the mood for the holidays! You can still pick up some advanced chord voicings (7ths & 9ths) by watching my hands. To tell which chord I’m playing, you can watch my left hand. I almost always play the root of the chord as the lowest note.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping on your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe,
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow,
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa’s on his way;
He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
And every mother’s child is going to spy,
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And so I’m offering this simple phrase,
To kids from one to ninety-two,
Although its been said many times, many ways,
A very Merry Christmas to you
